Netbooks are the latest gadget to hit the market in an effort to popularize mobile computing. Rather than looking at wireless computing as a purely technological development, I am also interested in the sociological implications of the growth of this particular type of hard ware. What does it mean for the family for instance?

I am also interested in the impact on the modern office which is already required to comply with the expectations of mobile computing. There will be plenty of articles that will look at the technical aspects of the Netbook but few people will try to link it to the very important factual reality of mobile computing.

The first thing that the Netbook will bring to mobile computing is convenience. You can be able to carry out both business and personal transactions all over the world without losing some of the functionality that you have been accustomed to. The process of making old technologies compatible with mobile computing is quite useful here because even if you do not have the right specifications you can ask to upgrade so that you may participate in mobile computing. This means that you do not have to jump through hoops to get a mere enhancement to your computer system. This is something that busy people will appreciate because it leaves time for other activities.

What will drive the market?

The technical specifications of the Netbook will determine the extent to which you can participate in mobile computing. If you buy equipment that does not have the right specifications it will be nearly impossible to do effective mobile computing. I know that there is expense involved at every stage but if you ignore the technical aspects of your equipment then you might end up making lots of losses along the way. Investment in good technology almost always pays off in the end.

There is a very fast pace of change and development in the mobile computing. That means that Netbooks will become outdated in a relatively short space of time. The manufacturers have their work cut out trying to catch up with everything that is going on in a very dynamic industry.

That is why they can make mistakes by going too slow on development or releasing some new version that soon becomes outdated. The same problem will affect the customers who are effectively required to dance the tune of fashions. Whatever is in is not permanent and they are required to get the newer versions every so often.

The next question is to wonder whether Netbooks will survive the mobile computing age. I am of the view that mobile computing is so routed in the modern world that it can only develop at every stage. The Netbooks are just one of the many gadgets that will try to feed the phenomena but ultimately the mobile computing will be the longer concept. I do not think that we can go back to the old days of having hundreds of wires sticking out of our computers.
